John 20:31 VBS Exegesis

by Jason Smathers on June 9, 2009

You will find my style to be a bit different from yesterday. As I learn more about working with kids, I hope my explination is becoming more effective for teaching kids (1st & 2nd grades).
“But these are written so that you may believe Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and by believing you may have life in His name.” John 20:31 (CSB)

The Old Testament of the Bible told about Jesus a very long time before He was born so we would know for sure that He is the Son of God when He came. When Jesus did come, the things written in the Old Testament about the Son of God actually happened. The Book of John along with all of the New Testament details the life of Jesus so that everyone can know that the Son of God has come. We can believe every word of the Bible because it is God’s word and the human writers were protected from error by God.
John tells us in this verse that he has written the truth about Jesus down so that we may have life. This is because we are spiritually dead until the day we are blessed with faith in Jesus. It is very important to be spiritually alive because anyone who dies spiritually dead spends forever in hell. When we are blessed with faith in Jesus we have eternal life, which means we will live forever. There is only one way to have life and that is through Jesus Christ and God’s word is the only way we can know who Jesus is.
